The trees are located along the access road and will be cut and removed in stages and lowered to the ground via block and tackle. The project will not take place during the migratory period of the salamonder and will commence in early June 2000 to be completed by November 1, 2000.

Notice of Exemption

Exempt Status
Statutory Exemption
Type, Section or Code
Section 15304 Class 4(d)
Reasons for Exemption
The removal of exotic eucalyptus and other non-active vegetation is consistent with the Revised Draft Recovery Plan for the Santa Cruz long-toed salamander (1999) and the Cooperative Agreement between the Department and the USFWS (1997, 1987). Encroachment by exotic plants reduces the upland habitat utilized by the salamander during certain stages of its life history. The eucalyptus control will take place during the non-migratory period and to avoid unnecessary impact to native vegetation, the trees will be removed in sections and lowered to the ground by block and tackle. The projet will not only remove a potential seed source for re-infestation, it will also provide an opportunity to improve and restore salamander habitat.
