Document Description
The proposed project is intended to provide hunting opportunities for elk as an element of the Department's elk management program. It is based on allowing the take of a limited number of elk as a biologically sound management option for selected herds consistent with maintaining healthy elk populations. The proposed project implements Fish and Game Code sections 332,1801,3400-3409 and 3951 as they apply to elk management. Tule elk hunting, as a management tool, will not be authorized when the Department's statewide population estimate is below 2,000 animals. As proposed, elk hunting would be independent of other management elements, including relocating animals to suitable habitat, issuing depredation permits to alleviate property damage, providing photographic and viewing opportunities, natural history study, and interpretive programs relative to elk.
