Document Description
The Dance Building (renamed Kaufman Hall) Seismic Renovation project will strengthen the seismic force resisting system; upgrade fire and life safety systems; correct accessibility deficiencies; and improve space utilization and building function. The seismic strengthening work for the foundations will involve excavation of a portion of the basement, resulting in the addition of approximately 7,600 gsf of unimproved space to the 81,000 gsf building. As construction requires complete evacuation of the building, the majority of the Kaufman Hall functions will be temporarily relocated to the Southwest Campus Staging Building and return to Kaufman Hall following completion. The project also includes construction of a new single story garden theater at the northeast corner of the lawn terrace north of Kaufman Hall. The theater will be a freestanding approximately 3,600 gross square foot structure designed to match the historic character of Kaufman Hall. Design of all aspects of the renovation project conform with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties as certified by the State Office of Historic Preservation in August, 2001. Construction is anticipated to begin approximately Winter 2002 and be completed by Winter 2004.
