Document Description
The project consists of seismic research within the Santa Monica and the Santa Susana Mountains. This project is part of a much larger study within the greater Los Angeles region. The research will include the placement of seismographs, drilling of boreholes, detonations, and ground shaking. Seismographs will be placed at approximate 100-meter intervals along or near both routes and each will be buried in a 1 foot hole. There will be two boreholes locations where small explosives will be placed. One will be located just southeast off of East Canyon Mtway in Santa Clarita Woodlands Park and the other, east of Reseda Blvd., accross from the Braemar County Club entrance within the Mulholland Gateway Park. Boreholes will be 8 inches in diameters, extend 60 to 100 feet below the ground surface, and be lined with iron or PVC casing. A drilling rig mounted on a 3-axle truck will drill the boreholes. Boreholes are not primed for detonation until just a few minutes before detonation. All work will be preformed by and supervised by USGS staff. No potential for significant impacts to the environment are anticipated.

Reasons for Exemption
This is a major study conducted by the USGS and the Southern California Earthquake Center and is part of the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program. The goals of the study will help educate earthquake professionals by collecting and surveying seismic imagery in the Los Angeles region. The goals of this project will help in understanding the processes by which earthquakes are generated, collect data needed to protect to predict strong ground shaking during future large earthquakes, better locate earthquakes, and better communicate earthquake hazard information to the public. This project will not trigger earthquakes and all necessary precautions regarding site specific environmental impacts have been assessed and no significant impacts are anticipated. Boreholes are located in already disturbed sites and along or near existing roads. Any immediate disturbance will be fully restored to pre-existing site conditions.
