Document Description
The previously mentioned "backbone" of this public agency communications system would employ a microwave interconnect of the emergency communications sites and a 480 MHz radio system for communications between dispatch centers and mobile and portable field units as well as field unit communications from any mobile or portable unit to any other mobile or portable unit (e.g., police, fire, ambulance). The redesigned microwave trunk would be a combination of new 6 GHz and 10 GHz digital components in addition to the reuse of some existing 6 GHz analog components. The 6 GHz analog equipment can be used where the anticipated demand is less. The microwave backbone will provide service independent of typical commercial landlines. Landline telephone connections to existing public agency and emergency service telecommunications sites have been problematic in the past. Landline communications are susceptible to being interrupted by broken wires, high winds, rain, landslides and earthquakes. This microwave system will be more dependable overall because the system maintenance and operations responsibilities lie with the MERA and not an outside utility.
