Document Description
Repair 25 sites of levee slope erosion that occurred since 1997, primarily during the "El Nino" floods of 1998. The damaged sites range from about 60' to 590' long, extending between 20' to 30' upslope, with a total length of 3,890 linear feet proposed for repairs. The estimated total acreage of levee slope to be repaired for this project is less than 2.5 acres and there will be no inwater work. All sites had some kind of preexisting rock protection such as cobble or small riprap. The proposed work involves the judicious placement of rock protection such as cobble or small riprap. The proposd work involves the judicious placement of rock revetment in a shallow, single layer within eroded sites of limited extent above the summer waterline. No trees or brush will be removed, and although the rock will be placed around the trunks of the scattered woody vegetation on some sites, this has not been found to cause significant injury or mortality in the past. These maintenance repairs of the levee slopes will have minimal direct environmental impacts. In the long-term, this will benefit the riparian streambank of the Sacramento River by arresting bank erosion before it becomes severe.
