Document Description
Naval Station, San Diego (NAVSTA-SD) is seeking approval from the California Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) for a removal action at Sub-Site 2A. NAVSTA-Sd is proposing to excavate approximately 28.100 cubic yards of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), metals, and dioxin contaminated soil from Sub-Site 2A. All excavation will be backfilled with clean soil and the area will be regraded to original. Sub-Site 2A, western portion of Site 2 (Mole Pier) was used for the disposal and open burning of demolition debris and hazardous waste. Wastes including pilings, lumber, concrete, asphalt, and various other combustible and non combustible materials from the base, including gasoline, motor oil, and diesel fuel were used to assist in open burning of refuse and debris. The disposal activities were discontinued in 1972. Currently, the area is occupied by various facilities, including the Consolidated Divers Unit and the Public Works Center Paint Shop.
