Document Description
The project is a joint effort by the City of Sacramento and the US Bureau of Reclamation to bring the fish screens at the Fairbairn and Sacramento River WTP's intake structures into compliance with current National Marine Fisheries Service and California Department of Fish and Game fish screening criteria. The project will include an approximately 80-foot-long extension of the existing Fairbairn WTP intake structure on the American River, including retrofitting of existing screens, placement of new screens and installation of a screen cleaning system. The existing Sacramento River WTP intake structure cannot accommodate the new screening requirements; therefore along the Sacramento River, the project involves construction of an approximately 180-foot-long new intake structure, fitted with new screens and a screen cleaning system. The project will increase protection of juvenile fish at both intake structures by lowering the approach velocity and reducing the mesh size of the screens, thereby reducing the chances that fish would be impinged or entrained into the screens. The project also facilitates continued delivery of water to the City.
