Document Description
The proposed project is the construction of a new four-and five-story (approximately 78,500 assignable square feet [asf]) Physical Sciences Building on the site of an existing parking lot just southeast of the intersection of McLaughlin Drive and Steinhart Way in the central Santa Cruz campus. The project would provide classroom space, teaching laboratory space, computer laboratory space, research and research support space for Chemistry, Environmental Toxicology, and Engineering programs. In addition to the proposed building, the project would provide new and improved pedestrian paths, a loading dock and loading dock access road, a shuttle stop, emergency access to science hill, disabled parking, connections to existing utilities, storm drainage facilities, a new or modified cooling tower, and landscaping. The building would be constructed on a 2.3-acre building site located on and adjacent to existing parking lots #113 and #114 on the central campus; the drainage improvements would be constructed on a 0.21-acre site located in a tributary of Moore Creek, southwest of the building site; and the cooling tower would be constructed on a 0.24-acre site located northeast of the designated "Campus Core" in the UCSC 1988 Long Range Development Plan (LRDP); the cooling tower site is designated "Campus and Community Support." The primary objective of the project is to remedy existing and anticipated space deficiencies and functional inadequacies in campus academic buildings.
