Document Description
The project, approved on June 15, 1999, is an approximately 170-acre railyard terminal to accommodate projected intermodal container distribution to and from the Port of Oakland's maritime terminals. At the main yard area, the project consists of raising the current ground elevation and repaving the site for development of eight rail lines and associated entrance gate, administrative and maintenance structures, new utility systems, container storage, truck parking and new roadway access. The portion of the site located on the Knight Yard in the former Oakland Army Base may be used for auxiliary railcar storage at full project buildout; this use will require reconfiguration of the existing track layout. The objective of the project is to provide safe, efficient and cost-effective movement of containerized intermodal cargo between the Port of Oakland berths and railcars. The project will provide direct rail access to the Port for railroads with no current access, thereby reducing the transport of cargo over Bay Area roads.
