THIS IS AN EXISTING 553-BED ACUTE CARE TEACHING HOSPITAL OPERATED BY THE COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES, DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SERVICES, DEPARTMENT OF HOSPITALS. THE FACILTIY IS AFFILIATED WITH THE UCLA SCHOOL OF MEDICINE AND ASSOCIATED WITH THE HARBOR - UCLA RESEARCH AND EDUCATION INSTITUTE A NON PROFIT MEDICAL RESEARCH ORGANIZATION. MEDICAL WASTE IS GENERATED DAILY ON THIS 72 ACRE SITE AS A RESULT OF ACTIVITIES AT THE HOSPITAL, MEDICAL CLINICS, AND MEDICAL RESEARCH FACILTIES. APPROX. 125,000 POUNDS OF MEDICAL WASTE IS TREATED ONSITE PER MONTH AS PART OF ROUTINE OPERATION. THE METHOD OF MEDICAL WASTE TREATMENT FOR THIS PROJECT IS BY STEAM STERILIZATION (AUTOCLAVES). STEAM STERILIZATION IS PERMITTED METHOD FOR TREATMENT OF MEDICAL WASTE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE PROVISIONS OF THE MEDICAL WASTE MANAGEMENT ACT
