THIS PROJECT WILL PROVIDE TRAPPING, SPAWNING AND REARING OF CHINOOK AND COHO SALMON. APPROX. 40000 CHINOOK SALMON WILL BE REARED FOR RELEASE IN THE SPRING OF 1997, AND APPROX. 6000 SALMON FROM FISH RESCUE FROM THE MATTOLE RIVER SYSTEM WILL BE REARED FOR RELEASE IN THE SUMMER OF 1997 AND APPROX. 40000 COHO SALMON WILL BE REARED FOR RELEASE IN THE SPRING OF 1998 INTO WATERS OF MATTOLE RIVER DRAINAGE, HUMBOLDT COUNTY, AT SITES APPROVED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND GAME. ALL OF THE WORK WILL BE PERFOMED USING HAND CREW LABOR. THE GENERAL PROJECT WORK PRACTICES WILL NOT EMPLOY ANY HEAVY EQUIPMENT AND WILL NOT IMPOSE ANY THREAT TO FISH OR WILDLIFE.A TRAPPING AND REARING PERMIT WILL BE IN PLACE DURING ALL PHASES OF FISH HANDLING THROUGHOUT THIS PROJECT. THE PROJECT OBJECTIVE IS TO ENHANCE THE CHINOOK SALMON POPULATIONS IN MATTOLE RIVER SYSTEM.
