The Central Subway to Chinatown is Phase 2 of the Third Street Light Rail Project that would extend light rail for 1.7 miles on a surface/subway alignment from the current terminus at Fourth and King Streets to Jackson Street in Chinatown. Under the Locally Preferred Alternative, the rail would operate on the surface from Fourth and King Streets to a portal between Townsend and Brannan Streets where it would transition to subway operations. There would be three subway stations: Moscone, Union Square/Market Street, and Chinatown. Other alternatives would include one surface station and a split Union Square and Market Street station.
