California Science Center Phase II Expansion Project

In 1993, the California Museum of Science and Industry (now known as the California Science Center) approved the California Museum of Science and Industry/Exposition Park Master Plan and certified the Program EIR for the Master Plan. The proposed project would consist of the construction of a new wing on the west side of the existing California Science Center building. The 1993 Program EIR evaluated the environmental impacts of proposed new and expanded museum facilities. As described in the 1993 Program EIR, the California Museum of Science and Industry (now known as the California Science Center) facilities would be constructed in phases. Phase I, involving construction of the central segment, would contain approximately 225,000 gross square feet of space. (Phase I was completed in 1998.) Construction of the east and west wings (Phases II and III), which would contain approximately 375,000 gross square feet of space, would occur subsequently to completion of the central segment. An Addendum to the 1993 Program EIR has been prepared, which is attached to this Notice of Determination. The addendum addresses the environmental consequences of changes to the design proposed in the 1993 Program EIR. The addendum has determined that the proposed changes are minor and would result in no new significant impacts to the environment not previously addressed in the Program EIR.
