THE PURPOSE OF THE MOCVD FACILITY IS TO GROW SEMICONDUCTOR CRYSTALS, PRIMARILY LASER DISDES. THE PURPOSE OF THE SDF IS TO THEN FABRICATE THESE CRYSTALS INTO DEVICES FOR USE IN VARIOUS RESEARCH ACTIVITIES AT LLNL. THESE FACILITIES ARE NEEDED FOR TWO REASONS. FIRST, THEY WILL ALLOW LLNL ACCESS TO SPECIALIZED TECHNOLOGIES THAT WOULD OTHWISE BE UN- AVAILABLE. SUCH ACCESS WILL ENABLE STATE-OF-THE-ART RE- SEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN AREAS SUCH AS SOLID STATE LASERS.
