The purpose of the project is to prevent further spread of this nonnative invasive species within coastal sage scrub, thereby maintaining the quality of nesting and foraging habitat for coastal California gnatcatcher (Polioptila californica californica). Approximately ten mature century plants located near the trailhead signs (Figures 2-4) will be photographed and cut down to the base. The aboveground portions of the century plants will be removed from the site without disturbing the soil. Each century plant stump will be treated with a systemic herbicide by Natural Resources staff. Work will take place outside of bird breeding season. Cultural monitors may be required.
