Work will: • Remove or reduce fuel from around improvements such as pit toilets, signs, and culverts; • Manually remove vegetation and leave on site to decompose naturally or burn by prescribed fire; • Prior to ignition, use chain saws to cut down the encroaching conifer trees within or along the prairie edge to reduce fire intensity; and • Use an integrated weed management plan to control invasive, non-native plants including teasel, thistle species, jubata grass, and Himalaya blackberry that may resprout or newly germinate after the prescribed burn. Parks will perform these prescribed burns in the fall after at least one precipitation event or just prior to the predicted season-ending precipitation event, or alternatively, burn prairies in winter or spring during short periods of dry weather. The burning and noise from power equipment within 0.25 miles of marbled murrelet and northern spotted owls nesting habitat will occur outside of breeding season (February 1 – September 15).
