The proposed encroachments (55 sites in Sholes Creek; 58 sites in Fourmile Creek) seek to augment instream wood by constructing wood structures in the stream channel. The BLM and their partners identified treatment sites in reaches with low potential for natural-wood recruitment and accumulation, and selected existing stream features where they expect wood structures to enhance and/or retain desirable channel characteristics and habitat. The Middle Mattole Instream Wood Project is one component of a larger project known as Redwoods to the Sea Corridor Forest Resilience Project. This larger project will create shaded fuel breaks in nearby-upland locations, which will supply the Douglas Fir stems used in the construction of wood structures. A helicopter will fly and place wood in the streams, with assistance from staff on the ground. Helicopter operations require careful coordination with biological-support staff. Designated Biologists shall be present at each site to identify vulnerable fish and wildlife resources and facilitate operations and equipment use. The Designated Biologists shall ensure the risk of take is minimized and, if necessary, clear the site and safely relocate fish and wildlife. In instances where the risk of take exists and Designated Biologists cannot reasonably move fish and wildlife (e.g. nests), Permittee shall seek alternative locations for wood placement.
