Document Description
The Fire Safe Council of San Diego County and five implementation partners seek to perform fuels reduction, reforestation, and pest management on state, tribal, and private lands within Palomar Mountain to prevent catastrophic forest habitat loss. We aim to work collaboratively to protect this priority landscape against wildfires and other environmental threats, while increasing carbon sequestration and habitat space for owls to ensure protection to San Diego communities, wildlife, and forests. As part of this collaborative treatment project, the tribe is proposing Fuel Breaks Units 1-4. These units are along the "Palomar Divide Truck Trail." Mastication and/or brush removal is proposed 100' on each side of the road to establish a "sheltered fuel break." Sheltered fuel breaks retain significant vegetation as habitat for animal populations. For Fuel Break Units 1-4, approximately 50-70 percent of the brush and small diameter trees are proposed for removal within the 200' overall fuel break area. These units are approximately 138 acres combined.
