Document Description
Undertake improvements on the Karen Bakerville Smith Memorial Trail & Schoolhouse Trail at Columbia State Historic Park to provide safe recreational facilities to park visitors. Work will: On the Karen Bakerville Smith Memorial Trail: (3960ft) - remove eight trees that fell due to the soft and wet soil conditions - crews clean up these areas and restore the trail to its original alignment. In areas where washouts have occurred, reconstruct the trail; - Restore original grades to properly direct surface water runoff in the future; - Place native soils at the affect areas and may receive geotextile fabric with drain rock and Terra Pave or equivalent. - Lightly brush the alignment at the areas affected by deadfall. - Retain any spills within the parks and rehabilitate the affect alignment surface with pine needles and native materials - Replace missing rock wall stones when possible. - Replace missing and/or dilapidated trail number posts; -Excavated up to 16 new 6x6x18' deep post holes along the length of trail and - Remove large pebbles/rocks in trail that cause tripping hazards, excavate up tp 3' for repairs, fill as needed, slope for drainage and compact surface. On the Schoolhouse Trail: (333') - remove dead trees and limbs; - remove loose gravel, take down to native soil leaving existing pavement, add base material and grade to native slope for first 100'. Use native soul from work site when possible to fill in deep ruts; - Restore elevation by moving native soul to eroded land and grade to natural slope and elevation; - use vibraplate or roller to compact the native soil and dg; - Edge trails with 1'x4' wood or plastic edging with metal stakes to hold in place or round logs up to 5' in diameter anchored with rebar drive through predrilled holes. At the accessible parking area and trail to the back steps of school house: - remove damaged and uplifted plastic mat and, as needed, remove existing dg material for repair - replace borders as needed using wooden blocking - grade levels and replace with terrapave or approved equal.
