Document Description
The DTSC has issued an emergency Permit to NAS North Island in San Diego, CA to treat hazardous waste by open detonation. The items requested to be treated are used marine flares, mortar tail boom and fuse. The items were discovered and recovered from the Coronado Beach and Naval Point Loma. They are currently being stored at NAS North Island in an Explosive Ordnance and Disposal (EOD) safe holding area. The items along with other items that may be discovered will be transported to the Naval Air Facility (NAF) Bombing Range in el Centro, CA where they will be treated by open detonation. Both transport and open detonation will be done following military protocols. The NAF Bombing Range in El Centro has been chosen as the closest, safest, and most appropriate location for disposal.
